Intelligent France

Gotta love the super academic exams in France. One of the four questions in today's exam was something like this:

What was the most important thing you learned during this class and from the readings provided? Discuss.

MY answer was pretty much:
I have done the course before. I didn't learn anything. I hope I won't be punished for not being offered anything new to learn.

Health Care

In Scotland:

During the first week the Uni provided us with the possibility to register with a local doctor. Filled in a paper and received a confirmation by mail. Didn't have to use the services once during three years as attendance was optional.

In France:

Bring a medical certificate if you're ill, even for one day. All absences must be explained. Where do I find a doctor? Do I have to pay for it? Do they speak English? Blah, easier just to go to class and spread the illness.

Mr. Lonely ★★★

An American indipendent film by Harmony Korine.

While watching I was constantly comparing the film to Werner Herzog's production without noticing one of the actors was Werner himself! Apparently he's a big fan of the director.

The story was poor to be honest but visually the film was magnificent. This is a screenshot of one of my favourite scenes:

Rognes Gig

My last.fm friend Fred (30 year old female, festival organiser by occupation) gave me, Joni and Markus a ride to Rognes(a small village 20km north from Aix) to see one of the best gigs of my life. The venue was part of an art gallery, wine cost 1€ and the bands were amazing. The supporting act was a debut by Professeur Sloggy. The closest comparison I can make is Manu Chao. As he sang in French, I obviously didn't understand most of the lyrics but I got the main words like "sadistic".

The main act was a joint effort of two bands: Narrow Terence and Mansfield Tya. Imagine young Tom Waits and Shannon Wright, accompanied by two violins, a keyboard, a guitar and a bass.

Rubik - Dada Bandits ★★★★

I now officially nominate the opening track 'Goji Berries' to the class of the greatest Finnish pop-rock songs ever made. It joins my short list of 22-Pistepirkko's Birdy and The Crash's Sugared. Together with Horrors' Sea within a Sea it is the best single I have heard in YEARS. Please have a listen if you haven't heard it!

Théo Hakola

Théo Hakola is an American singer-actor-novelist-ex London School of Economics student with Finnish roots. I came across his name when reading about Noir Désir whose first LP he produced in 1987. Apparently one of his books, La Valse des affluents, has been translated into Finnish (Hyväosaisten valssi). Check out Here come the Golem from Theo's Myspace.

★★★★★

Kubrick's

Paths of Glory ★★★★

It will really make you question things about our troubled, convoluted world and how things are to often immorally and inhumanly run all in the sick name of greed and destructive power. Not too lovely, for the director pulls no punches. This film really has grown more profound (and currently pertinent) since its initial release. Also the editing is taut and concise; there isn't a single wasted moment.

Joe Meek

I strongly recommend watching this documentary of Joe Meek, a revolutionary tone-deaf music producer. He was a paranoid gay drug addict who finally shot himself with a shotgun. I am yet to see the bigger budget, Telstar, which was released last year.

During the film I noticed a resemblance between these two acts. I had no idea Jack the Ripper was a cover song.

Later I noticed Crawdaddy Simone was also a cover. I know nothing about music.

Boethian Wheel

C: COCAINE

Nothing gets a lady to come up to your house more quickly than an eight ball. Nothing makes her more likely to receive your kiss and you more likely to have balls enough to deliver it. The problem is you have to do at least four lines and three songs before you can bust a move and that is not exactly a recipe for an erect penis. Just multiply Shakespeare’s line, “It provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance,” by about a thousand. You’d be an asshole not to have Viagra hanging around, but most of us are assholes, so fuck it, you try to feed it in there like a piece of wet spaghetti. Once it’s two-thirds of the way in, you start “rabbit fucking,” hoping the friction will bring it to life, but alas, her vagina poos it out like a sad worm getting voted off Survivor. The worst part is, if you don’t get a second chance, she tells all her friends and you are forever known in girl land as “Sad Arthur” (or whatever your actual name is).

I don't really buy music anymore. Therefore, I thought it's almost worth mentioning when I do!

Nickel Eye: The Time of the Assassins

Nickel Eye is the solo project of Nikolai Fraiture, the bassist of the Strokes. The album was released a few months ago, but it hasn't become too popular. This is mostly due to the Strokes' reunion which means Nikolai's been busy with recording new material with them instead of promoting this. Great album, it's good to know that there's at least one of the Strokes who can go solo in the end.. referring to Albert Hammond's solo albums and random tracks Julian Casablancas has featured in.

This is the single, think I've heard it at least 40 times by now. For me, that's a lot. I usually get bored very easily. What suprises me the most is how well Nikolai uses the monotone singing voice associated with Julian, it's almost more Strokesy than in Strokes' third album!

Jenny Wilson: Hardships

The Swedish daycare centre milf releases her second album.

Agaskodo Teliverek: Psycho Goulash

Recommended to me buy Riina's London entourage. If you get a headache from listening to Battles, Deerhoof etc, don't bother. Doesn't fit most moods a normal human being goes through but when you're buzzing and have endless spring energy in your veins and are going to enjoy a walk outside, it's perfect.

OWN NOTE: Go for a walk. (I must be pale as a zombie, an endless flood of essays and exams has kept me indoors for a month. Painful.)

Sin Fang Bous: Clangour

Another solo project, this time it's Sindri Mar Sigfusson from Seabear. I have to say I prefer this to Seabear. For shy geeks.

Prostitution Behind the Veil

After Robocop 3 had finished, I began channel surfing and after a while got stuck on BBC4 watching a Swedish documentary Prostitution Behind the Veil which follows the life of two crack whores in Teheran. At first, I merely kept on following it to brush up my Swedish (for which purpose it's also good as the narrator/director Nahid Persson is foreign and speaks very slowly and clearly) but soon realised it's one of the most interesting documentaries I've seen in ages, and it's available on Google video (with English subs);

Doughball

It's been a bad day. The new regime has fallen; I missed my first lectures of the semester, mainly to avoid seeing certain three faces I can't stand. Even the hot Italian master's student girl wouldn't have made up for the misery seeing those three assfaces would've made me feel that early in the morning. Well, the presentation is over and hopefully I will never have to speak to them again. I thought I had relatively good team working skills, but this project has made want to withdraw to a cabin in the Finnish lake district and never come back.

And how the hell did David Thewlis ..
