Amer / Animal Kingdom

Amer (2009) ★★★★

This is basic movie Freud, elegantly mounted. The soundtrack (footsteps, dripping taps, creaking doors, banging shutters) is ominously exaggerated. The close-ups are extreme. Colours change melodramatically to fit the shifting moods. The music is borrowed from old horror films. The dialogue is at first sparse, then non-existent. Luis Buñuel (sliced eyeballs, insects crawling out of bodies), Mario Bava and Dario Argento are affectionately alluded to. Viewers are left to create their own narratives or absorb the events into their own dreams and nightmares. This is art-house horror, a pure cinema for connoisseurs, a return to late-19th-century decadence.

DADA

An 80s new wave band from New York City. Couldn't find this gem of a song anywhere so felt obliged to upload it.

"The band seemed to have a sense of humor, from their vocal delivery, lyrical content, and even the record label (presumably self-released under "A Major Recording Label," whose only releases are these two records). The band members even all shared the same last name, though they may very well be brothers. Slight tongue-in-cheek humor aside, these tracks are perfectly suited for a dancefloor, and are some of my favorite obscure gems."

The Bell Jar

The Bell Jar (1963) ★★★★★

The Bell Jar is American writer and poet Sylvia Plath's only novel. The novel is semi-autobiographical with the names of places and people changed. The book is often regarded as a roman à clef, with the protagonist's descent into mental illness paralleling Plath's own experiences with what may have been either bipolar disorder or clinical depression. Plath committed suicide a month after its first UK publication.

Gong Fei

My mates from Dundee have released their EP on Bandcamp. My favourite track Loose Lips Sink Ships is especially worth checking out. The guys have expressed an interest in touring in Finland so please leave a comment if you know anyone who might be willing to facilitate gigs in Turku - Helsinki - Tampere regions. In 2009, Gong Fei played at T the Park festival with some small bands like The Killers, Blur, Franz Ferdinand and Kings of Leon...

Kuhle Wampe

Kuhle Wampe oder: Wem gehört die Welt? (1932) ★★★

Kuhle Wampe (Who Owns the World?) is a 1932 German feature film about unemployment and left wing politics in the Weimar Republic. The script was conceived and written by Bertolt Brecht. He also directed the concluding scene: a political debate between strangers on a tram about the world coffee market. The final scene is so strong, intelligent and even moving, that is brings together the somewhat fragmented, impressionistic and occasionally surreal sections that have come before.
-Wikipedia & TrustMovies

The film ends with the singing of the Solidarity Song, with lyrics by Brecht and music from Hanns Eisler:
